Well thank you verry much. My best picture taken on a flash workshop. Was so much fun to do

Behind The Lens

Location

I had the pleasure of taking a workshop about flash photography from an ambassador of Elinchrom equipment. That's where this picture was taken. At the end of the day we all took pictures of the three models together. This is the picture of mine that I liked the most.

Time

This picture was taken in a empty factory hall at daylight, a large plastic 'screen' was made to help keeping the background black on the pictures and keep all the used flour in a controlled area.

Lighting

In this setting we had two studio flashlights and a softbox. One flash on the left To light the people and one behind the models on the right to light up the flour. Both had a 'grid' mounted to keep the background black and to keep the flare out of the lens.

Equipment

I don't know the exact details of the lights that we used during this shoot because it was demonstration equipment from the ambassador from Elinchrom. It was a softbox and two studio lights. For the picture I used my own Canon EOS 700D with the standard18-55mm kitlens and a remote trigger. Two people are throwing the flour to the models from each side while the girl models hit on the ground with there hands. ISO200 - F4 - S200 - 26mm.

Inspiration

I was inspired by a good friend of me who organized the flour shoot and Geert Langelaan who gave me the workshop and made this happen.

Editing

The picture is post processed with Adobe Bridge to do a little bit of sharpening, gave is a bit more contrast and ad a bit of the blue collor.

In my camera bag

My equipment is all on a budget but I am very happy with it. Its a Cannon 700D with three lenses. 10-22mm, 18-55 kitlens, 55-250mm, and one polarization filter. All this will fit easily in one small bag so i can move a lot, even to some difficult places. Sometimes I carry my tripod with me in a separate bag.

Feedback

For these kind of pictures you need a good light plan. Pictures of fog, smoke, water spray and flour do need a light source from behind. Think about you car driving in the fog. Because we also had models, an softbox in the front was used to light them from the front. Participate in a flour shoot before you start organizing one your self. Make a lot of test pictures before you start throwing flour at your models. Think about the settings and the end result, what would you like to accomplish? Take good care of the models it is not easy for them. Take a good look at your very first, but also between the pictures to see what you like and what you don't like. It Will help you to improve your end result. A lot of practice is also needed for the models (and flour throwers) how to release the flour to get the right picture. Use a tripod so you don't necessarily have to look trough the ocular when your shooting, you want to see the hole stage and all people to choose the right moment for the picture
