Location
The Norwegian woods provided a great background for this shot. The model and I took a walk in the neighbouring forest, looking to experiment with some action shots. We got lucky with the weather too, which isn't a usual treat.Time
I wish I could say something exciting like "it was taken before sunset; the model bathing in the warmth of the last rays of sun before it was engulfed by darkness" but I'd be lying. The photo was taken sometime in the afternoon, as in at that time of the year it gets dark pretty quick in Norway.Lighting
I needed the shot to be mysterious and dark to fit with the one half of the project, namely the Zombie part. We ventured in the forest with just one or two reflectors and made it work together with the natural light provided.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 7D Mark 2 with a 50mm. No tripod or flash used.Inspiration
This is part of a project started with my friend who at that time was into SFX makeup. We decided to show our love for Disney princesses while combining it with gore makeup for a Zombie vibe. Although we did not manage to create all the princesses we had in mind, three of them were finished: Merida, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. We ended up pleased with the final shots and we had gained some experience in fields such as SFX makeup, retouching and model work.Editing
There is quite a bit of post-processing work behind this shot. Actually, the model and the background are probably the only "real" parts of the photo. The bow is actually just a round cable tube mended and painted to look like wood - this required some adjustment layers and gaussian blur to look somewhat realistic. The arrow itself is a stick and the arrowhead is added in Photoshop with additional blur and colour correcting. The same goes for the fletching, which was particularly challenging as it had to be placed between the fingers. In my camera bag
I guess in the business I'd be called a poor photographer - I don't have a lot so I don't have a lot to carry. I have a few lenses that I carry with me wherever I go, especially the 50mm, but other than that, nothing interesting.Feedback
Just have fun with it. If it's supposed to be a creative shot, give yourself some room for mistakes and improve on the spot. It's incredible how much easier it is to work with something when you truly enjoy the whole idea of the shot/ project you're working on.
