This is a view on the river upstream of skogafoss water fall in Iceland. I made this shot one afternoon last September 2016 while actually scouting for a spot for the next sunrise. But suddenly the lights and colors of the sky made it a quite interesting composition. So I pressed the shutter!

Location
I took this picture in South Iceland, above the famous waterfall Skogafoss. This was during my first fully dedicated photography trip with my dear friend and talented photographer sander Grefte.Time
The picture was absolutely not planned. It was taken late in the afternoon while we were scouting for a nice location for the next sunrise. Fun fact, we missed the sunrise because had spent big part of the night out up to 4am shooting the northern lights.Lighting
The light was unexpected. I was just searching a nice composition for the next sunrise. I actually only realized how good was the light while reviewing the pictures on the back of my camera. To my defence, this was day 5 of our trip and I was seriously sleep deprived so I guess my eyes and brain were a little tired...Equipment
I used the Nikon D7100 and a Tamron lens 24-70 with ND filters all mounted on a steady tripod Manfrotto 055 to allow a long exposure to smoothen the water.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the first morning light hitting the mountain in the background and was therefore looking for an interesting foreground during the afternoon of the day before. I climbed down the rocks to reach the river and luckily was able to reach a rock in the middle to the river splitting it in two streams. I took some shots to test the composition and while reviewing the pictures I realized the light was actually pretty good. I guess the climbing part had distracted me a little bit.Editing
Not particularly. As I was not using a gradient filter I did corrected the exposition of foreground and sky by shifting the shadows and highlights. In my camera bag
I've always hard time to keep my gears to a minimum. As I enjoy both landscape and wildlife photography, and can't resit to some macro photo I have lenses covering the 10mm to 600mm range. All supported by a heavy tripod Manfrotto, so yes my bag is pretty heavy. That way I also save on the gym card! My camera is a Nikon D7100, trusty for the last 7 years, although sometimes a bit slow for fast moving wildlife.Feedback
Iceland is a paradise for landscape photographers, it is just like no other places, with stunning views and ever changing weather. But because of that the famous places have been heavily photographed so it's hard to make innovative pictures. I'll advice anyone going there to look for different angles. On that particular moment maybe 50 tourists were photographing the waterfall from below while i was the only one taking a picture of the river above it.
