Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken along the plains along the Gibbon river on the way to photograph the geysers in the morning light. However the fog and bison were something that I always wanted to capture.

Time

The sunrise was just beginning at the time of the exposure and the darkness of the wet bison against the fog warmed by sunrise was a spectacle I will not soon forget.

Lighting

Between the shadows along the grasses in the foreground moving towards faint outlines of the ridge and tree line stood the magnificent bison crossing the river. Truly a majestic sight.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D610 with a 24-120 Nikor lens mounted on a trusty Sanford and Davis tripod I have used since the late 1970's with a much newer Manfrotto head.

Inspiration

I am always looking to take the non-iconic shots in an iconic location. While bison are approachable (CAREFULLY!) without spooking having no detail in the image still yields the knowledge that they are American bison grazing in the morning light.

Editing

I typically do mainly curves, levels, dodge and burn techniques. However there is a soft texture overlaid on this image to soften just a bit more than the image was in the raw.

In my camera bag

I always have 2 bodies (D610 and D7000) with me to avoid battery and other failures. The crop sensor normally houses a 10-24 so that I can capture extreme wide angle without a lens change. The D610 usually has a 24-120 but at times a 70-300 is needed to get the compression in the image I am after.

Feedback

Yellowstone wakes early, so set your alarm for o-dark-thirty and know where you want to be when the sun rises. Good scouting has no substitute when it comes to capturing the beauty of our national parks and the wonders that lie in them!
