I wanted to create something atmospheric in time for Halloween. This was one of the results, and for my first foray into the art of lighting and composing a subject with intent, I'm quite pleased with the result!
Objects were laid out against a black table cloth and backdrop. The room was dark except for the illumination from the candles.
I'm new to photography so don't own any special lighting equipment. With the light from the candles only illuminating the sides of the cauldron, I needed a way to cast light on the front of the cauldron, across the crystals and the cards. This was done using short 1-2 second bursts of light from a torch, directed at various points, from various angles during a long exposure of 30 seconds. The hands were in place for the last 5-6 seconds of the shot.
