Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local winery in Niagara, Ontario called Hernder Estates Winery. They have a beautiful covered bridge in their entrance way, where you can see the mansion of the winery in the background.

Time

We were out for an evening cruise in the summer time with the local car club. We were all drawn to the bridge and thought it was such a great place to take photos, especially since the summer sun is not that forgiving!

Lighting

Although it was shot in the evening time, the sun was still blazing. We used the bridge to provide shade and block out most of the brightness that would have washed away the Camaro's bright colours. Yet, you can still see some of the sun coming through the back of the bridge.

Equipment

Because I wanted this image to be sharp, I used my trusty tripod. I got down to wheel-level and made sure that everything was perfectly still while I took the photo. Because there were so many layers of light (the bridge was dark yet extreme sunlight in the background) I had to make sure that the main object was well illuminated. This resulted in the tripod being used. No flash was used to light up the car.

Inspiration

What goes around, comes around. My car group has always been so generous to include me in all of their events, that I love to give back with shots like this of their cars! They are always inspiring me to upgrade and practice, just the same way they upgrade and practice with their cars!

Editing

Yes, I used PS Lightroom. The car itself turned out a little darker than I wanted it to, so I had to brighten it up a bit. At the same time, I did not want to whitewash the background, so I had to play around a bit until both sides were happy.

In my camera bag

Normally I have my Nikon D3100 and my trusty 50mm 2.8. However, in this case I wanted the bridge to come alive as well, so I had to switch out for my 18-55mm lens. I always carry more than one aperture (usually two different lenses), because you never know how focused you want to be on the object. I also carry an extra spare battery, a spare memory card, and my tripod.

Feedback

Get your friends involved! I ask them 'what do you like most about your car?' and every answer is different! With his car in particular the owner said, "I like the style of the body because it looks like it has so much power." He then proceeded to show me where he was looking and it resulted in this shot. Car guys love looking at their babies all day, so they are more than happy to tell you what their cars best angles are. That is why I love getting my friends involved in my shots.
