Location
The photo was taken on Swamp Road in Pittsfield Ma, The Berkshires. The Berkshires is one of my favorite places to shoot.Time
I was standing on the side of Swamp Road in Pittsfield, MA where I had made several horizontal images of the swamp as sunrise approached. I thought I had some really good photos and started to cross the road to my car. I looked back to see how sunrise was progressing. To my amazement the colors had become awesome and I naturally walked back across the road, but decided to set up for a vertical to take full advantage of the reflections in the swamp and the flowers in the foreground.Lighting
The lighting was so special and the colors were very saturated. That dawn light can be beautiful. Because I started to walk away thinking I had some good images but decided to look back at the scene, I learned a great lesson. Great scenes need time to develop, especially during that golden hour during sunrise and sunset. I took the images at ISO 100, at F16. The shot was made on October 16, 2016 at approximately 7:15 AM.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with a 18 - 140mm lens and a polarizer. Really Right Stuff Tripod (TVC-34L) with a BH-55 ballhead. I used a cable release and a bubble level attached to the hot shoe to save time in post processing.Inspiration
The Berkshires is one of my favorite places to photograph in all seasons. I pass this swamp whenever I drive up to my friend's condo in Pittsfield. It sets up for a great sunrise image.Editing
I use Lightroom Classic CC and did the preliminary development there and then moved into Luminar 2018. This is a High Dynamic Range (HDR) merge of five exposures. This ensured my being able to get good exposure in all the areas from light to dark.In my camera bag
I carry a Ruggard R3 backpack when I travel, with the Nikon D7100, 18-140mm lens, 55-300mm lens, and a 105mm macro lens all Nikon. Various filters including the polarizer, a 5 stop mor-slo, and a 10 stop mor-slo.Feedback
As I mentioned above, I used to leave a scene as soon as I was convinced of having gotten some good images. I feel it is important to hang around for a while to see how the light develops. Especially during sunrise and sunset. The light keeps changing so that you might get a great shot instead of a good shot. A photographer must always be willing to learn, even the older ones like me who have been shooting for over 30 years.
