My 1st attempt at this infamous landmark. I really love the fog and wanted to capture the beauty at the time.
If anyone would like to share their experiences when capturing foggy scenery, please comment below. I'd like to learn more and very much appreciated :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. This was the last stop of our road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco via the infamous and beautiful California Highway 1.

Time

The driving (and stopping for majestic beautiful sceneries) took us about 12 hours to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco. We rested overnight in San Francisco and woke up early to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Even though we are a little tired from driving, but getting up early to the busy spot means we can enjoy the view more when it's not full of tourists visiting.

Lighting

We didn't really plan for this landscape shot because I was enjoying the different sceneries along the scenic coast. It was more of like a snapshot of our trip. But this shot came out really great. It was early in the morning but the scene is just covered with fog and overcast. Not a single ray of sunshine. So I took a few photos at different locations of the iconic Golden Gate bridge. And it turns out black and white really captures what I saw on that day.

Equipment

At the time, my only combo is the Sony a7 and zeiss 55mm F1.8. For a long time this was my only "kit" for travelling. This options allowed me nice balance of size, weight without sacrificing image quality. Even now with more lens add on to my collection, I still loved the 55mm F1.8. If I have only 1 lens to carry. It would be it.

Inspiration

When you're in San Francisco, especially the first time, it's impossible to miss this iconic landmark. I took a few photos at different locations around bridge. I want to capture the size of the bridge. I think this photo does it. You could see the bus on the left side of the photo. And if you look closely, you could see a person paddling at the bottom edge of the photo. This gives a perspective of how massive this bridge is.

Editing

Due to the overcast and foggy condition, there was just some bland colours in the photo and it create a bit of distraction. So I decide to change the photo to black and white. I like how this photo came out. It shows at I saw on that day.

In my camera bag

I started out with Sony a7 and zeiss 55mm F1.8. Now I've upgrade my camera to a7III and a couple more lens: Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 zoom that seems to be able to capture mostly everything I need on a road trip. Sony 20mm F1.8 G for the extra wide angle shots, and Sigma 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary. I never bring all the lens with me a trip. I would bring one or two depends on the trip. For a normal leisure travel, I either bring Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for versatility, or 2 primes: 55mm and 20mm F1.8 for a better low light capability.

Feedback

If you have time, always research the location or the landmark that you are trying to capture will give you a better outcome. But if you just happen to stumble along a great place without any research info at hand, then take lots of photos at different spots and angles and decide which one you like best afterwards. But the most important thing for me is: Enjoying it with your eyes first. Taking it in. Because if you're too busy trying figure out the angles, lighting conditions, etc. you would missed the moment. Then it's just photos of a place you've been to, and it's not a photo that reminds you of that special moment that you enjoyed.
