This is actually a composite image made up of 4 images all captured around 6:30 AM on Feb 27, 2016.Lighting
All the lighting is ambient. The trains have lights and since both trains were not in the station at the same time, the lighting on the platform opposite the train easily provided sufficient light for the long exposures I was taking.Equipment
I used a Nikon D810 with a 24mm lens set at f13. ISO was 640 and shutter speed was 4.0 seconds. It was mounted on a ProMaster tripod and triggered using the internal shutter delay and multi-image setting.Inspiration
I love capturing motion with my camera. I had captured many other images of the trains passing through the station or approaching/leaving but I wanted one where I had trains moving in both directions. It took some time to find a moment where I had two trains running in different directions passing within a few minutes of each other while it was mostly dark. I then set my tripod up on a large concrete pad with a manhole centered between the tracks and outside the station area. I shot one round of images while one train was passing through and then reset the timer for the next train coming through from the other direction then blended all of them in post.Editing
I blended the selected images using photoshop with several layers and adjustments then made final color/brightness adjustments in lightroom.In my camera bag
For local photo opportunities, I usually carry one of my D850's, a 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 lens combo and may add either a tilt-shift, macro, or my 200-500 depending on the goal for the image session.Feedback
Experiment with the length of exposure to get enough opacity for the trains to be substantive. In some of my initial shots, the exposure was too long and there wasn't much to see of the trains. As always, anytime you are working around trains or any other form of moving machinery or vehicles, please exercise extreme caution. While my camera was busy clicking away as the trains went by I was positioned on the platforms well away from the trains and tracks.
