Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside at a a cemetary in Portland, Oregon. Shooting on location has always been a great way to help me tell a story with my images, because the backdrop is already provided.

Time

Early morning get up to do makeup and hair, stylist was touching up the wardrobe and we got on "set" about 11am. It was great overcast day, no rain! Perfect for black & white, to help get the tones of the photos to pop. A gray sky is ideal to add contrast in black & white, as well as color photos.

Lighting

I really wanted to use the low clouds, overcast lighting on its own, because it was perfect to create the contrast I was looking for. Just a reflector to decrease any shadows, and make the skin tone brighter.

Equipment

Nikon, portrait lens, reflector

Inspiration

I have always like cemetaries, even as a young newbie photographer. Cemetaries just seem to always offer a great backdrop to anything you want to look moody and ethereal.

Editing

I did print this myself, from black & white film that I processed, and printed it using a fiber based semi-gloss paper.

In my camera bag

Camera, 2 lenses, speedlight in case my strobes go down for some reason, light meter, a few filters, and always extra batteries!!

Feedback

Shoot what inspires you, and don't overpose the model. This was very posed, but with her head tilted down, gives it a moodier feel.
