With unknown meanings and interpretations lost to time, this Newspaper Rock in Southern Utah shares a glimpse into the minds of past human inhabitants. Petroglyphs such as these can be found inscribed into rock walls’ desert varnish throughout the southwest United States. The purpose is anyone’s guess; whether they were used to tell stories, warn of dangers, or to simply pass the time as the seasons changed.

As the etchings age, oxidation occurs making them darker in color as the manganese-iron deposits form. There are multiple layers of markings if you look closely. By calculating of the speed of oxidation, it’s been determined that some of these date back nearly two thousand years to the Anasazi’s time in the region. Though some of the newer markings are from A.D. 700 to 1300, the time of Fremont, and even as recent as A.D. 1500 onwards while the Navajo called this land home.
