Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a local nature reserve called "BioRia", at Salreu, Portugal.

Time

My idea was to shot on the golden hour, but the cloud formation on the horizon were warning me that probably there won't be any great light later, so i choose to shoot on the afternoon, at 4:00 pm

Lighting

For this photo i just need soft light with some dramatic and stormy clouds, something that the weather forecast show me that was happening on that day.

Equipment

I shoot this image with my Canon 50D with a Sigma 17-50 f2.8, on my old Giottos tripod

Inspiration

My main inspiration for this photo was the death of my grandfather, that had passed away a week before the making of this photo. I use his old telephone, and create the idea that we are getting a call from wherever he was, throught his old telephone. That's the reason why i need a dramatic sky too.

Editing

This image had requires a lot of polish on it, since it is a composite of two images to make the levitation of the telephone possible. Besides that, just the general ajustments and a bit of green tint on the sky.

In my camera bag

I carry most of the time all my lenses, filters, two yn speedlights, cable remote, extension tubes and most important my camera. My lenses are: Canon 10-22, Sigma 17-50 2.8, Canon 100mm macro, Canon 70-210 f4, a Sigma 150-500, to shoot wildlife, and sometimes an helios 44m. I always carry 4 filters too, 3 ND( one of 3 stops and two of 6 stops) and a cpl. Oh and my tripod! I can't get out to shoot without my tripod!

Feedback

I'm not very experienced on levitation photography, but with my little experience i can advice to stick to an idea, then formulate it in your head and take note of everything that you could need to make the shot. Be prepared for some mistakes and unforeseen events. Put your camera on a tripod and make at least two shots, to mask out what you don't want on the final photo. After that have lots of patience on the editing of the image to make it shine and to bring to life your idea!
