Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. It was my first time visiting the area so it was definitely a fun, new adventure for me!

Time

It was nearing sunset. There were actually a lot of people walking around the area so I had to time it just right so that no people wear walking past my shot!

Lighting

All the lighting here was from natural sunlight.

Equipment

This photo was taken with the new (at the time) Canon 5D Mark IV on a tripod. My lens was a 35mm prime lens which is one of my favorites for these type of wider outdoor shots!

Inspiration

Fall being my favorite season, I really wanted to capture that fall "flavor" in a photo. All the brown tones, leaves starting to covering the ground, etc. When walking past this spot, I saw the dynamic lighting with the sun through the trees and I was inspired to stop and capture the moment as is.

Editing

I merged 3 raw photos in Photoshop to get the HDR effect I was looking for. I tweaked the shadows and highlights until I was satisfied, I warmed up the photo a bit to fix the white balance, and sharpened the details and voila!

In my camera bag

I pre-ordered the Canon 5D Mark IV and it has been an amazing body for all my lenses since. I always bring my 35mm f1.4 prime and 100mm f2.8 prime - a phenomenal macro lens - every time I shoot anything! I do not use zoom lenses often but my 24-70mm is quite a beast and the versatility can come in handy so I drag it along when I have my significant other there to carry some of my gear for me. Also, a tripod, water bottle, and some snacks!

Feedback

Turn around. A lot of the time when walking/hiking along, we tend to try to find the beauty in what is ahead of us. Undoubtedly, there will be some good shots, but sometimes there is magic behind us too. On the other side of this photo was a small waterfall and that is what all the other people around were taking photos of. Just turn around once in a while and see what new perspective you can discover!
