Throughout much of literature and particularly in poetry a shepherd’s life was frequently described in idyllic terms. In reality, the occupation of a shepherd was arduous in the extreme – long tiring days, inclement weather, fending off attacks by predators. Shepherds were often assisted in their task by incredibly talented dogs who would do much of the dreary day to day work of minding their flock. This painting is of a shepherd and his dogs tending a small flock in a high summer pasture before the winter snows drove them lower down their mountain home.
