While walking the street of Memphis during our photo walk, the walk leader took us down onto Beale Street, the blues mecca of the world. As luck would have it, cars aren't allowed on Beale Street but this little '58 VW was on it anyway. Needless to say, it drew quite a crowd and stood out beautifully. Personally, I have a love for antique cars and this little jewel has seen quite a few miles.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was photo was taken on Memphis’ world famous Beale Street during a Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk a couple years ago.

Time

About 6pm in the summer.

Lighting

One thing about cityscapes, the light is always good because the tall buildings shade out the direct sun depending on he time of day.

Equipment

I shot this using a Nikon D750 and a Sigma 24-105mm f4 lens hand-held.

Inspiration

I love old cars of any type, especially an old VW! If my camera is on me, I’ll get a photo of it. Even more so, if the car is as cool as that VW!

Editing

Just simple processing. Converted to B&W, added contrast, some vignette and cropped a little.

In my camera bag

I once was a die hard Nikon shooter but over the past year, I’ve moved to the Olympus system. Now, my daily shooter is an Olympus Pen-F with a 17mm f1.8 lens. I also own several of the Olympus primes, 12mm f2, 25mm f1.8, 45mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8 Macro. They do the job I’m wanting today!

Feedback

Look for the unusual angles. Don’t shoot eye-level all of the time. Shoot on the ground looking up. Shoot from the hip sometimes. Look at how the light is falling on your subject. If it’s not good, move around your subject and look again. And always be aware of the corners of your frame. It can make or break a photo.
