Awesome image! Love the light trails but really drawn in by the texture you brought out on the colosseum! Nicely Done!

Behind The Lens

Location

Rome, Italy

Time

It was at night at around 9pm

Lighting

The only light sources were the street lights, car lights and building lights.

Equipment

My only gear were a Canon Mark II and a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens.

Inspiration

I've always been so fascinated by the grandeur and beauty the Roman Architecture and, although I had previously seen the Colosseum in daylight, this time I wanted to see it at night. When I arrived there it was actually later than I had expected but I was determined to make it work. When I saw the white lines of the sidewalk I inmediatelly decided to use those as my leading lines into the Colosseum. I did not have a tripod and because of the long exposure required for night photography I had to find something to place my camera on. Luckily I found some kind of street structure to place my camera on.

Editing

Yes, I did some color and exposure correction in Lightroom. Then I took the image into Photoshop where I removed some trash on the grass and sidewalk. I also cropped the image a little and finally did some sharpening.

In my camera bag

The equipment on my bag varies depending on the kind of photography I am doing. For travel photography I try to carry as little as possible. Usually one Canon camera body, a 24-70mm lens, a 70-200mm lens, two batteries and as many memory cards as I can afford to carry with me. After my experience with this and other photos, I decided that a tripod is very essential so, I now carry a small tripod.

Feedback

I have learned, the hard way, that a tripod is a must for night photography. Learn everything you can about your camera and controls. A small red flashlight is great to be able to see your camera buttons and controls. If you are using a DSLR, as I do, make sure you lock up the mirror before clicking on the shutter as it might cause vibration and make your image blurry. Also, if your camera is on a tripod, you should turn off vibration reduction on your lens or your image can end up blurry. The Vibration reduction function on a lens is to be used only when handholding a camera.
