This image was created on a Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk in downtown Joplin, Missouri.Time
Image was taken at 11:26 AM toward the end of the photo walk.Lighting
I wanted the blue in the side of the building to compliment the deep blue sky. I used an ND4 filter to balance the shadows and highlights since I was shooting at near noon day sunlight between a broad tonal range white and dark blue.Equipment
This image was created using a Nikon D70 coupled with a Tamron 24-70 MM at 25MM. F9.5 at 1/350 sec exposure, no exposure compensation or flash.Inspiration
We were looking for usual patterns and viewpoints and I wanted the blue in the side of the building to compliment the deep blue sky. I moved to maintain symmetry of the clouds to the strong converging architectural lines of steel siding.Editing
I used Nikon Capture NX-D for Raw processing and then Photoshop CS2 to to make minor adjustments to deepen the sky blue and shadows. In my camera bag
Nikon D70 body, Tamron 80-210 Telephoto, Tamron 24-70, Flash, basic filters (ND4, Pastel). Accessory wise I keep several SD cards, battery charger, plastic bag for rain, 18" fold up silver reflector, cleaning kit, and multi-tool in a Pelican hard case. I also have a soft bag I carry on my hip if needed.Feedback
Look up, plan, and position until you achieve the angles, etc. that you desire. Before you shoot, envision the finished image in your mind and then begin evaluating what your settings are to capture your vision. With the right angles, noon day can still be a god time to capture images but you have to carefully plan what feature to expose to get your shadows, highlights, and colors balanced in your image. Neutral density filters are a must to have for these types of images.
