This photo was taken in my home studio, in Bordeaux, France. It is the place where I feel at ease and where I like to receive my models. It's a pretty user-friendly way to work.Time
For this kind of shooting I like to "work" at the end of the day from 8 or 9 PM to 1 or 2 AM. I feel comfortable, there is no sound outside, no distraction so I can only focus on my photo challenge.Lighting
Lighting is quite simple here. I had no studio flash at this time so I used only two LED lights, a beauty dish facing the model and an octogonal modifier on her left. Honestly, the most important part of the image is not the light for once.Equipment
This image was taken with my NIKON D810 and the impressive NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8. I set aperture at f/5.0 to give me the short depth of field I needed to focus on her incredible blue eyes and red hair.Inspiration
I can't really tell. The red-brown background worked so well with her hair and eyes that we made several good shots this evening. For this photo almost everything is in the colors, framing and the position of the eyes... For this photo I was really close to my model. Making her look out of the frame was the way we found to make the image looks mysterious, strong and meaningful.Editing
I always use Lightroom first to clean the main skin defects and adjust shadows and high lights. Then Photoshop comes to make the magic. Sarah has a beautiful face and her eyes are so wonderful that the easiest part was done before the shot! It took some time to exagerate the main colors (red, copper, blue) and balance them well. Little obvious crop and that was done!In my camera bag
The fantastic NIKON D810 is always ready to shoot (charged battery and card loaded). Some lenses are very affordable like the NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 and they are great. This said I usually take the outstanding SIGMA ART 35mm f/1.4 and the NIKKOR 105m f/2.8 VR. My bag is full of batteries, SD cards and pills for headeaches!Feedback
Patience, imagination and great confidence in the model (reciprocity is needed too) are the main keys. You also have to stay curious and very humble: listening to and learning from the critiques are so important that you should not avoid them.
