I had headed up Chinook Pass here in Washington State to try do some astrophotography over Mount Rainier, I had stayed at the top of the pass all day hoping the skies would clear at dark...that never happened. I had been walking around earlier in the day and remembered the walking path over the pass road. Not wanting to make the trip home without any new images I decided to at least get some long exposure shots of the cars as they passed beneath the walkover bridge. As soon as this pickup trailer combination went under where I was shooting I was excited that I had exposed long enough to catch it until it had disappeared.. looking back now, it was complete accident that I was shooting at that moment and that this combination of truck and trailer left me with an amazing light trail... and that it exposed and lit the roadway and forest so beautifully. It was all a crazy random happenstance. It's always rewarding that by working the shot and the area I was in, I could still leave with a shot I was not only proud of, but one i had never even intended on shooting.Time
This ended up being an all day project, very little of what I had shot that day ever made it to editing. I had slept in the car to wait for darkness... unfortunately, the skies I came to shoot were behind a thick cloud cover.... when I finally found my shot, it was around 1am.Lighting
Luck is a precious commodity. I had tried different shutter speeds and had varying degrees of success as the cars went underneath the walkover. This one happened to have many lights on the truck and trailer that lit the roadway and surrounding forest nicely and I had timed the shutter correctly to catch the entire pass.Equipment
Shot on my Canon 70D with the 18-135 kit lens from a small tripod perched on the rocks above.Inspiration
I prefer to shoot at night.. I love animating my pictures with long shutter speeds to catch movement .... this one happened to have everything go correctly. I was pretty certain it worked as soon as I looked at the review. Photography to me is like golf, when you have that one great shot it inspires you to think you can do it again and analyze how it was achieved.Editing
I enhanced in Lightroom and sharpened in Photoshop, it was a very basic post process on this particular picture.In my camera bag
I have invested in a couple tripods so that I always have one with me... and a handheld shutter release. I've recently updated to a professional grade lens, but knowing how my camera works and understanding the relationship of shutter, aperture, and ISO, has been more important than the quality of the equipment that I'm using.Feedback
Yes, work the shot until you have it timed out... then pray for the right amount of lighting to fit the settings you've chosen :)
