Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Morning Glory Pool in Yellowstone National Park, WY

Time

It was a memorable trip to Yellowstone. This photo was taken on the morning of our last day in the park.. We had to walk on the board walk from the Old Faithful Geyser to reach this pool. It was a nice walk and we could see few geysers gushing gases and water out. We stopped at few points and finally reached the pool. The pool stands for its name. It is really a Glory to Yellowstone National Park. Reach the pool in the morning sun to get a beautiful view of the pool in the morning sun. The trip to this pool really glorified our visit to YNP.

Lighting

This was shot with the available natural light. As it was cloudy, the light was perfect ! This was a panorama of over 15 photos

Equipment

This was shot with Nikon D5100, 18-55mm kit lens. I had to lean over the wooden fence to take this shot. I had my friend holding me by my backpack while I was leaning to take this shot.

Inspiration

Yellowstone was a photography experience for me! The opportunities the park provide are immense. I wanted capture the beauty the nature presents in its raw form. I couldn't cover the whole pool with my lens. I was able to take a pano from my smartphone, it came out very well. That gave me an idea to take a panorama of the pool with my DSLR. I shot around 15+ images at 35mm. The final image had amazing resolution and details.

Editing

This is a panorama shot of over 15 photos. I have a 18-55mm kit lens which is not wide enough to capture the whole pool. So, I thought why not take a panorama and stitch it later. That worked for me as I could produce a sharp image of the pool. I worked on Adobe Lightroom for some minor adjustments and used Image Composite Editor to stitch the panorama. Later used Photoshop to adjust the panorama to remove any distortions.

In my camera bag

I carry my Kit lens, a 50 mm f1.8 prime and a telephoto lens (55-300mm ) for long shots. When I do any portrait sessions, I take only my trustworthy primes 50mm and 85mm f1.8 !! I have a small reflector and flash, just in case !

Feedback

Wait for other tourists to clear the spot, wait for the time when the scene is clear of any disturbances. To click a panorama make sure your settings don't change between each shot. Try to click the scene following a particular sequence making sure you covered the whole scene you want to cover. Don't just click the subject you want to capture but also the surroundings, to get the completeness and a perfect panorama. For this shot, i clicked the pool and the nearby trees and the board walk to get in the complete picture.
