Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small pedestrian street in Tiel, a small town in The Netherlands

Time

It was on a Winter evening when me and my brother were walking back to his apartment after having dinner (It's him, unknowingly posing for the shot). Due to the season the night falls very early... making it a convenient time of the year for night photography.

Lighting

I like dramatic lighting, playing with shadows and to just work with whatever the city lights provide you with. I noticed the nice shadows and shimmer of the moist street. So I just set up a manual exposure and waited for the right moment to get the shadow in the way I liked it.

Equipment

I shot this with my Olympus OM-D EM5 mark II, with the tiny 17 mm f 1.7 prime lens.

Inspiration

I like night photography, because the dark makes everything look so different, yielding a whole different atmosphere. I had my camera set up and ready... and was just waiting for something to catch my eye.... and then I just grabbed the moment, quickly framed the shot and pushed the button.

Editing

I had to lower the brightness of the highlights. In the original the lights were somewhat overpowering and I wanted to pull up the darker parts to keep some details in them.

In my camera bag

No matter where I go, there is always room for my Olympus OM-D 5 mark II in my bag. It's small but packs a serious punch. Often I also bring my 12-40 f2.8 pro objective. But at times when just going out for a walk in the city, I don't even take a bag...just hang my camera over my shoulder with the 17mm prime and perhaps a spare battery in my jacket pocket. Since I am also a vintage analog-lover I also often take either my Leica m2 with 50 mm of my Rolleiflex TLR 80 mm, depending on whether it's candid shots or landscapes/cityscapes I am after.

Feedback

For night shots, a good lens (light sensitive) is essential. A good prime-lens will open a whole new world of possibilities. Using them, you don't need a tri-pod but just can shoot hand-held on the fly. And preset your camera manually to the correct exposure. I set it to allow me to freeze people at normal walking speed. And turning on image-stabilizers for sure helps! Big bulky cameras can be cumbersome to bring... I opted for a small one, so that I hardly ever feel hesitant bringing it.
