Every autumn thousands of pheasant are released by gamekeepers around the National Trust property of Studley Royal. The deer park is closed to the public on Fridays so shooters can kill them with shotguns. This year Natural England, the govt body responsible for nature conservation, is issuing licences to kill buzzards, a protected native species, to 'protect' non-native game birds. Birds of prey take about 1% of game birds, more are killed on the roads where flocks of pheasants can be a hazard.
