Location
Cochrans Lagoon, Macmasters Beach, NSW, Australia. Which is a wet land of national importance located on Central Coast between Sydney and Newcastle.Time
It was late in the day just as the anglers were setting up.Lighting
It was afternoon light softened by the sun being behind hills to the west.Equipment
The camera I used was a Canon 7d mark 2 with 70-200 f4 L series. The photo was taken hand held.Inspiration
The Lagoon is well known for bird life and when visiting I always walk with my camera. The day was still with the lagoon being almost a mirror. It was unusual that there was a solitary pelican. The bird was stalking the anglers in the hopes of relieving of their catch. I deliberately composed the shot to make the reflection symmetrical.Editing
I always shoot in Raw. I do my jpeg conversion in Lightroom. The black and white conversion was done in Silver Efex Pro 2. I chose to do the monochrome conversion because it was so late in the day that the colours were muted. In my camera bag
Sigma 24-105mm art series, Canon 50mm f1.4, Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary. Plastic bag for my bottom or knees. Quite often I leave the holiday house without a bag.Feedback
I have a passion for bird photography. Research is your friend, both book and field. Learn the habits of your intended subject. Wear muted clothing and walk quietly. Pause often keeping your camera close to your face. Keep your movements fluid. I set up the camera before I start with my starting recipe being 1/3200, f8, aoto ISO. Basically you can't take enough photos, sometimes I shoot high burst.
