Location
This was taken on a random road trip with my best friend. We both love photography and will go out for a day and just drive around seeing what we can see. In my area there are so many secondary and dirt roads that hide so many interesting things, mainly old homesteads, but this beautiful tree caught my attention immediately.Time
This was mid afternoon, the sun was at it's peak and the sky was relatively clear and bright blue. The intensity of the sun on this tree was stunning, it made it glow and stand out against the sky. It was just coming into fall, and the leaves had already turned yellow and orange. The tree held onto to it's leaves though, like it was holding onto summer for a little bit longer.Lighting
The lighting, while it was harsh midday sun, was perfect and made the leaves stand out so sharply. Which I needed to add the glow in post. I wanted it to glow against the dark sky.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 5D MkII using a 17-40mm F/4 Lens with UV filter. Handheld, no other equipment.Inspiration
I had previously shot a picture of the Burmis Tree near Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, and always wanted a companion picture to go with it. As soon as I crested the hill on the highway, this stood out like a sore thumb. Luckily there was space between this tree and the stunning row of trees right next to it. The lighting was very similar to my original picture and made the leaves stand out sharply in contrast to the blue sky. I could see the final image in my head while shooting it, and knew I had found the partner image. I have shot many other lonely trees, but this one was just right.Editing
Conversion to B&W with some minor color adjusting. I edited out a powerline sign that was in the ditch, and then I added the glow.In my camera bag
As always my trusty 5D MkII, and I generally always have on my 17-40mm as a prime. I also carry a 50mm f/1.8 and a 70-200mm f/1.8. Sometimes I have my full bag with my 430EX II flash and tripod, but not always. I like having to improvise sometimes to get the shot I want, helps to keep me from getting to relaxed in my photography.Feedback
My biggest thing, always have your camera. Always. Don't be afraid of harsh lighting, or even poor lighting. Experiment with it all. For this image, the best place to find these grand old trees is on the back roads, there are less chances these have been taken down. The untouched country roads are worth the drive!
