Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Time

The time that this photo was taken was in about early afternoon, after mid-day. The shadow cast on this figure reflected that the sun had moved towards the west and would set after several hours.

Lighting

This photo was taken in the heat of the day and the light was very harsh. The sun was very bright with virtually no overcast to soften anything. I was hoping to see something photogenic at either dawn or dusk but I never expected to capture anything significant with my camera at this time of the day but I was carrying it and I came across the statues honoring such brave men and women (and service dogs), so I took the photos thinking I may not get a second chance regardless of the light.

Equipment

I have an old Canon 50D that works perfectly and I have learned to master my equipment before I move onto something new. I had a new lens, the Tamron 16-300mm, F/3.5-6.3 Dill PZD Macro lens. Model: B016E that I wanted to try out that day and I was hoping to see how it would capture the photos that I would normally take without constantly changing the lens. What I had noticed was that it took very good pictures, however, I wanted to get a shallower depth of field at times. So the lens helps in some respects and I have to master how to manage it to get it to give me what you want or need.

Inspiration

I love to honor our brave men and women in all of our service professions, and I am touched when I see memorials of any kind that reflects the effort that someone took to honor them as well. Then when you consider that there are many who paid the highest price to serve and protect us, I couldn't help but feel that it is the least that I can do to acknowledge the sacrifice of the people (and service dogs) and the artist that makes all of this possible.

Editing

Post-processing involved simply trying to enhance for details to compensate for the harsh light that would either wash out the details or make the shadows too dark to see the important details. I thought it would be nice to make the floral colors pop a little bit and contrast with the gray statue.

In my camera bag

My equipment normally involves the usual suspects, various lenses, batteries, lens clothes, brush, release forms, and my independent photojournalist identification. Most extra and heavier equipment are usually in my car trunk so if I need it I can go back and get it. I usually plan my photo projects and will try to take with me everything that I think I will need.

Feedback

I would recommend going at a time when the lighting is not as harsh and that you have a lens that can give you a better depth of field if you wish.
