Behind The Lens

Location

Took this at the edge of a parking lot, at the rear, adjacent to an empty lot.

Time

This was midmorning, was out running errands.

Lighting

Natural light, thin veil of clouds diffusing the light.

Equipment

Nikon D3300 using a Tamron 90 mm macro lens, hand held.

Inspiration

I like this flower. Also this lens was new to me at the time. Opportunity presented itself, when unexpected. I spotted a few of these purple coneflowers, basically in an unused area at the rear of a parking lot and empty field. The light playing off the central portion of the flower is wat caught my eye and captured my imagination.

Editing

I'd taken this photo before any sophisticated workflow or tools. I think I used the Nikon provided tools to adjust the brightness and contrast and to crop the image. My editing philosophy is "less is more", I try to keep it simple and to represent what I saw in my mind's eye.

In my camera bag

I have a backpack bag. Nikon D3300 with 4 lenses. 2 kit lenses (18-55, 55-200) and 2 Tamron lenses, 70-300 and 90 macro. Flash, batteries, lens pen, spare memory cards, cables, chargers and so forth. I can attach a portable tripod to the backpack, but generally don't.

Feedback

This wasn't a planned photoshoot. I had my bag in the car. I saw this flower, grabbed the camera and photographed it. I have a Nikon Coolpix camera and keep it in the car. I live in a mostly rural area, so pulling over, grabbing it in the car to take a quick opportunity is much more frequent than planned formal shooting. I enjoy the spontaneity of it. Piece of advice? The very best equipment to capture an image won't help you unless it's in your reach. The best camera is the one you have with you.
