Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the back garden. I am always looking for new things to photograph and the dewdrops inspired me.

Time

The photo was taken on a cold winter morning at 7:35 am. The sun was just starting to rise and melted the frost just enough to reveal the water droplets on the vine.

Lighting

I knew in my mind the image I wanted to capture and by positioning myself to get the best from the available sunlight I managed to capture exactly what I was aiming for. I was hoping to capture the sunlight in the water drops with the darker background. Moving just a few inches can make a huge difference to the type of image that will be captured when using natural light .

Equipment

The image was shot with a Canon 50D, IS18-200mm lens, hand held

Inspiration

I was hoping to capture the sunlight showing in the water drops on the vine but overall the whole image of the vine covered in water drops after a very cold night, the spiral of the vine tendril and the sunlight showing in the individual water drops all were an inspiration and need to be photographed! In my thoughts anyway. There are so many photographic opportunities in your own backyard and these possibilities are worth exploring.

Editing

There was no post processing involved with this shot.

In my camera bag

Camera, I now have a Canon 7D MkII, EF-S 18-200mm lens, EF-S 55-250mm lens, EF-S 60mm lens, 2 x spare batteries, spare Compact Flash card and SD card (this camera can use both), cleaning gear.

Feedback

Don't disregard your own backyard. There can be lots to photographic opportunities in a yard, keep an open mind and think about how you can position yourself to take different angles of a subject and get different lighting aspects on your subject. Use the sunlight to get a variety of shots, move around your subject and don't be afraid of taking lots of shots to see what works best.
