Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Halim Perdanakusuma Airforce Base, Jakarta - Indonesia.

Time

I woke up in the early morning, and went to the air force base sooner before the aircraft take off. All pilots still in their room for the meeting of today mission exercise. I saw more then 10 fighter aircraft on the apron, prepared by the ground crews. About 8:30 AM some pilots coming to the aircraft. They took some preparation before flight. I saw a flight commander of F16 sitting in the cockpit, then I took a fast shoot with my tele lens. I took 3 shoots on the object.

Lighting

I just use natural lighting, morning lighting. The sun was not too high and the weather was good also, sunny weather. No flash on and using auto WB.

Equipment

With my Nikon D90 and Tamron 70-30mm lens, focusing on the pilot cockpit. I never use tripod when taking aircraft photography. It would make my hand free, so I can follow the aircraft movement. While taxing, take off or landing.

Inspiration

I like an aircraft or aviation photography. I saw many photo of military aircraft in aircraft magazines. It's trigger me to make a great aviation photo. This one is my best photo on aviation and human interest.

Editing

The original file is in color and JPEG format. I just adjust the color slightly and then convert it in BW using Lightroom. Ajust the brightness, no crop for this photo.

In my camera bag

For aviation photography, mostly I bring 2 cameras. One width wide lens and the lens is always discharged with the camera. One tele lens on other camera in my hand. Another lens with wide range of FL (18-200mm) ready in the bag. 1 backup battery and cleaning pack always ready. One flash standby, some times needed if I take a pilot photo in their room. Or if the weather is going cloudy.

Feedback

Hot weather and dusk at the apron, makes me ready with camera/lenscleaning pack, cap and small towel. Turn the camera power of when waiting (no shooting action) around the apron. Pay attention on the aircraft movements, and watch for a good moment on the ground attraction. Ground crew actions, pilot actions and etc.
