Location
This photo was taken in my home studio with a gray backdrop. The background textures were added in post while I was experimenting with a new retouching technique.Time
Mid afternoon, nothing too special about the time of day. The model did stop at a high end jewelry store on her way to my home to pick up that necklace though. It made the perfect addition to the final image!Lighting
I used one light set off to her left and bounced with a reflector to get the beautiful catch lights in her eyes. I love seeing interesting catchlights so I try to apply that to my own work as well.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon D5000 and an 85mm f1.8 lens. The camera was on my tripod so I could hold the reflector exactly where I wanted it and trigger the shutter and lights. I used an Elinchrom D-lite Rx 4 with the included 26"x26" softbox. Works exactly how I need it to in every situation and I've been shooting with that kit only for the past 4 years.Inspiration
I wanted to practice some new techniques, work with new people, and add to my portfolio as well as other peoples. I believe this was the 3rd model I had shot that day and she and I just got along so well, and we all know that when you get along with your subject, you can capture some really amazing images.Editing
I spent about 3 hours playing around in Photoshop after the initial retouch on skin and hair. Just added different layers and playing with the levels and colors until I found something that felt right. In my camera bag
I've had my Nikon D5000 since college and use it for everything. I also keep my 85mm f1.8 portrait lens handy along with my 50mm f1.8 for when I feel like switching it up from portraits to more full body and capturing interesting backgrounds outside. I prefer to shoot in studio most of the time but lately, I find myself shooting for clients on location more and more often.Feedback
Practice as much as you can. I know it can seem impossible to do so every day, but as long as you put the work in, it will pay off. Play with your lighting and reflectors, play with your lenses. Most of all, have fun. If you don't enjoy what you're doing, why are you doing it?
