Talk about a very pleasant place. People need places and conditions like in your image to just clear the mind when required.

Behind The Lens

Location

When I lived in Maui, watching the sunset was a daily ritual cause you never know what you're going to get. This was taken at the beach nearest my house, Kalepolepo. The water in the foreground reflecting the sky above.

Time

Early evening.

Lighting

For me, clouds make the sunset, without them there's no drama.

Equipment

Canon 60D with a 17-35 zoom. I'm a fanatic about straight horizons, so camera was on a tripod as it helps with composition.

Inspiration

We had had a lot of rain, which created a pool in the foreground. The clouds in it, the difference between another everyday sunset and a great one.

Editing

I almost always shoot raw, process in Lightroom and then photoshop. I darkened the corners and got rid of dust spots in the sky.

In my camera bag

I usually have the 17-35 on one body and a 70-200 on the other. I don't like to change lenses in the sand. My bag is light and on my shoulder, otherwise it ends up in the shot or soaked with seawater.

Feedback

Exposure of the sunset is pretty easy because it is the light source. Just meter off the sky. If you're shooting people, then flash is a necessity, preferably off camera. HDR or a split neutral density filter help keep the foreground light and the sky dark.
