Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Elliston park in Calgary Alberta during a week long annual international food festival and fireworks competition. Several countries participate and each has a different night to show off their firework skills.

Time

Fireworks start around 10pm because the sun sets quite late in the North. The fireworks are choreographed to music are synchronized with explosions of colour and showers of sparkling fire.

Lighting

Creating images from fireworks takes patience. You have to anticipate when the shot is going to go off and then when your camera fires the shutter has to stay open to record the light and the travel of the sparks. The only light you have is what the firework provides, ISO 1000 at F11 gave me approximately a 3 second exposure.

Equipment

For that shot I used my Canon 6D mk i , 24-105 zoom lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

I have always been fascinated by fire and wanted to record fireworks in still form. Fireworks are so beautiful and what better way to remember them than a still shot that freezes them in time.

Editing

In Lightroom I boosted the contrast just a little so I made the night sky blacker and the fireworks a little brighter

In my camera bag

I just bought a Canon 6D mk ii which is now my main body and the 6D is the backup. I shoot sports too so my Tamron 70-200 2.8 is always in there, the 24-105 f4 is my all-rounder and then a plastic fantastic 50mm STM. I have a flash cause...well...you never know and an ND filter just to make some of those long exposures longer.

Feedback

Go to firework events, compose your shot to fill a large portion of the frame, focus manually on the first shot fired (don't bump the lens, it'll ruin your focus and you wont see it until you get it home to edit and see slightly fuzzy images). Have fun while you learn and appreciate the beauty.
