Behind The Lens

Location
This is a self-portrait from just below the highest peak of Karavanke mountain range, Mt. Stol. I was pretty fortunate with conditions with fog rolling in the valley, adding a lot of light.
Time
Well, obviously this is a night shot. But it wasn't taken in the middle of the night as you can notice there is still some color from the sunset. It was taken about 1:40 after the sunset so there is still some light on the horizon from the sunset and Milky Way is already fully visible.
Lighting
Even though it's a night image and usually darkness prevails in shots like these light in the middle part plays an important role as it spices up the action and adds a lot to the overall atmosphere.
Equipment
Equipment plays an important role in night shots. I used Nikon D810A + Nikkor 14-24mm lens which is a great combo for night photography.
Inspiration
Mount Stol is the highest mountain of the Karavanks mountain range and the highest local mountain. Views from the top are very special reaching all the way towards the highest mountain in Slovenia, Triglav. I always wanted to do night shots from the top with Milky Way above the valley.
Editing
When post processing night images I like to keep them natural but still spice up the stars and Milky Way. In this case I had to tone down the light in the valley by quite a bit since it was much stronger from the stars.
In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D800 and Nikkor 28-300mm lens, but I add D810A and Nikkor 14-24 when I stay over the night.
Feedback
Night photography is very specific so I suggest you first check out video tutorials. You need to learn to manually focus with your camera and lens you use. After that start with the basic setting: ISO3200, F2.8 (or as low as your lens allows you), and time around 20 seconds. Timing depends on how wide you go, with rule 500. So if you have 14mm wide lens, divide 500 with 14 to get the maximum possible shutter speed (so the stars are still sharp). 500/14 = around 35 seconds, but I never use the time over 30 seconds so the stars stay sharp.
