This shot was captured on a trip to Antarctica with my brother back in 2010. King penguins congregated in droves on the South Georgia beach and humorous shots abounded! I am an amateur photographer who loves experimenting with light, angles and unusual moments that tell a story. This shot nicely captured this dual sun-bathing moment in an almost untouched part of the world.Time
Each day our Antarctic ship would navigate to find an area of beach that was land-able. We would travel in zodiacs to the beach and travellers would explore the unusual surroundings and its wildlife. This shot would have been taken in the early morning although it looks much later than that - due to the 21-hour summer days in that part of the world.Lighting
The backlight from the morning sun perfectly lit the penguins from behind - highlighting the fine details of their coat-tails and the glow of their contrasting orange feathers. The barren taupe landscape offset their vivid colouring and yet created an interesting glimpse into a part of their habitat.Equipment
The shot was taken with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT at 130mm with a zoom lens. ISO100 f/4.5 1/200Inspiration
Amongst hundreds of King penguins and their chicks, these two seemed to have found a moment of peace in the sun - despite the cacophony of penguin voices about them. The identical twin pose was too inviting not to take a picture!Editing
No post-processing was done to this picture. I am a bit of a purist and like to challenge myself to be creative in the moment. At most I will crop - but this photo did not need any adjustment. In my camera bag
I now have a Nikon D5500. I have an 18 - 200 mm lens so that I don't have to worry about missing moments to switch lenses. I always carry my tiny lens brush since I'm often in unusual outdoor locations and want to ensure that I have a sand, salt and streak-free lens. I like to travel light, so this is pretty well it!Feedback
Everyone takes photos these days and everyone wants to capture new and exciting pictures. Try to find the unusual within what is now usual. For example, penguins abounded where we were but there were many humorous opportunities within the time we were there. Look for something that makes the shot stand out - whether it is unusual lighting, an unexpected angle, a humorous moment or an interesting juxtaposition.
