Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on a public common in south London.

Time

Late afternoon on September 1st. It was the last day of school holidays so the park was full of kids making it harder to find a calm location.

Lighting

In wanting to keep a natural look to this photo no extra lighting was used. There was a lot of natural light at the time and this photo was taken out of any direct sunlight.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 550d with a 55-200mm canon f/4 lens. Nothing else was needed.

Inspiration

I love candid shots because of how natural the outcome is, it usually involves throwing out a pretty big net. I took this purely because I saw the oppitunity to take a natural photo while being at a good angle with a camera in my hand.

Editing

I always intended for this photo to be black and white which I did in lightroom while also adding extra contrast and clarity with some slight curve adjustments.

In my camera bag

On a normal day it's just a Canon 6d body with a 24-105mm f/4 L lens. I don't normally carry a flash unless I know it's needed. I'm much more likely to take my tripod from the 80s (which I love because it's so heavy) and slow down the shutter speed rather than adding flash light.

Feedback

This was a candid shot so it's all about simply having your camera with you when the oppitunity comes up. Even if it's a just a shot of someone hugging a dog I always shoot in RAW incase I do get something I want to work with. I almost always use a longer focal length to blow out any background and keep focus on the subject(s).
