Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Iceland in 2016. At my very favorit Waterfall of all time: the Seljalandsfoss. I was there 2 times now (both shots are in my profile). Once at noon to shoot the beautiful Rainbow that forms when the Sun shines. And the second time at Sunset (this Picture).

Time

We've visited the Jörkuslarlon by bus on this day and I remember the Weather was really bad there. Rain and very cold. On our way back to Reykjavik the tour-guide tells us we will make a short stop at selljalandsfoss too. But only for 20 minutes. I've checked the weather again and it looks like it would clear up. The sun already began to set and I get optimistic to get a good sunset shot at my favorite location. While driving, the Sun hides a few times behind the clouds. Will the sun last long enough for a few shots? I prepared my camera bag. Unmounted my tripod from the bag and put the 10 stop ND filter in my pocket to find it quicker.

Lighting

The bus stopped and, you guessed it, it was cloudy again. But I had 20 minutes to get to the spot I already know from my last picture, set up my tripod, get a few pictures with, and without the ND filter and sprint back to the bus. I jumped out of the bus as the first and ran. Everything was prepared and i did a few test shots. Only the sun was missing. Other photographers behind me complaining about the clouds. The time is ticking, only 10 minutes left. But then: It cleared up! Quickly i've took some shots with different exposure times and some without the ND filter for a sharp foreground. Then, time to enjoy this scene. It was AWESOME. The other photographers are happy too. What a scene, what a lighting. I was impressed and almost forget about the time. 5 minutes left. Time to get back to the bus

Equipment

My Canon 60D with my Sigma 10-20mm are my standard configuration in Iceland. I don't remember using another lens in this week. My Tripod is a Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH with an Manfroto 498 Ballhead. And I've used an 10-Stop ND Filter by Haida (Slim version)

Inspiration

The Seljalandfoss pictures by Elia Locardy. I've watched his Tutorials with Fstoppers where he had visited Iceland. This series and especially this Waterfall was the reason for this trip at all.

Editing

This picture is a Composition of 3 Images: an +2 exposure without the ND filter for the shadows, an neutral picture without the ND filter for the Sky, and an Neutral picture WITH the ND filter for the water. While processing this picture I noticed a Person on the path, posing for a picture, in one of the images. I decided to not remove him, like i did with the other tourists. He brings scale in the picture. Its always a problem with landscapes to communicate the size of the scene. This waterfall is 66m high! but only with the man on the path you can see the size in the finale image.

In my camera bag

In Iceland only my EOS 60D with the 10-20mm and an 17-70mm, an Actioncam, my Tripod, a few Filters and spare Batteys and SD cards.

Feedback

Timing is everything. Sometimes you are lucky, like me with this picture. I didn't thought about shooting this waterfall a second time on this day. I just was lucky to be there at the right time. If you don't want to rely on your luck, research as much as you can bevor you get out. Where is the sun? When starts the sunset or sunrise? Whats the weather like? And be early. If the sun sets at 9, be there at 8. And most important of all: Enjoy the scene for a moment without thinking about your shot. You can see pictures of this place all the time. But if you are there, it's a completely new Experience. Feelings wich you can only keep in your mind and not in your camera
