I noticed the pretty shavings that fell as I sharpenend a new pencil. I set up and took a few shots thinking about stilll life - then thought about the word play on sharp (focus and pencil). Minimising depth of field allowed me to place the pencil in the plane of focus but at an angle so that it was soft at both ends.
