Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Australia Zoo. He wasn't in an enclosure but sitting on a rock outside the reptile house. I spent ten minutes taking pictures getting closer and closer and he posed for me the entire time.

Time

This was taken mid-afternoon. We'd already been walking round the zoo for three hours at this point but I felt I was just getting into my stride.

Lighting

This image is composed with all natural lightning. The Rock was sitting in a shadowed area which created a great darker background effect.

Equipment

I used a Canon 1200D to capture this with a Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 Sh macro lens, hand held.

Inspiration

I love taking shots of animals and nature and had been keeping an eye out for a great posing lizard all day. This guy caught my attention sitting on the rock staring straight at me.

Editing

I like to tidy images up in post processing but this image needed very little. I brightened the image very slightly and made the colours slightly more vibrant but for the most often this natural.

In my camera bag

I always travel with my now upgraded camera, Canon5D Mark III, at least two lenses, Canon 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM and Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM, and if I'm out for the day then I'll take my tripod and remote too just incase. You never know what you might come across.

Feedback

Best advice I can give is to be patient. Don't rush up to any animals and if you have a lens with a high range (200mm+) then that makes it so much easier. Animals can be spooked quite easily and will disappear in a flash. This particular shot, I'd taken numerous shots whilst slowly edging towards him. Your first shot doesn't have to be the best.
