Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken of my 22 month old son on a sweltering hot summers day at Lizard Log Park in Sydney. I love this image because he looks larger than life but really he was only a little more than 2.5 feet tall.

Time

It was a challenging photo as it was mid day in really harsh sunlight, but the bright sun bouncing off the top of his head just adds to the magic of the photo for me.

Lighting

Everyone aims to get out for the golden hours but this picture shows that great photos can be achieved any time of the day! The magic is in the moment not necessarily in the lighting condition! This image actually would not have worked at golden hour as it needed the scorching heat of the middle of the day.

Equipment

I took this image using a Nikon 7100 and a 35mm prime lens.

Inspiration

I love taking candid photos and capturing those natural poses and unique moments that would otherwise be lost. I always look for opportunities to get out in beautiful locations with my family to capture really special moments of my children having the time of their lives.

Editing

I used photoshop to put a black filter over the background to make my son pop out of the image a little more. I love the depth of field on the photo but I really wanted to make him the focal point.

In my camera bag

I usually shoot with a Nikon D810. My goto lens as a Newborn Photographer is my 50mm Sigma Art Series 1.4. I love the bokeh I can achieve with this lens. I do prefer to use my Tamron 24mm-70mm for adult and family portraits and when looking for candid opportunities.

Feedback

Just have your camera ready at all times and just find settings where your subjects can really relax and let go. I think there is nothing more magical than capturing the true joy in peoples faces and body language when they are in a setting that naturally draws that out of them. Completely unaware that a camera is there capturing that magical moment.
