Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a trip across Nevada. More specifically, in the Virginia Hills near Fernley.

Time

I woke up early enough to beat the sun specifically to find and photograph the local wild horses I had seen in the foothills outside of town a few days prior. I was blessed to find many small bands and spent hours in the open air with the horses. This particular shot was taken mid morning after trecking with a group of youngsters.

Lighting

The lighting was starting to get tricky as the famed golden hour was over and being on the wrong side of the action would have created a completely different look. In this case I was at the perfect vantage point at the perfect time. This being said I had been adjusting camera settings throughout the morning.

Equipment

This was shot from my rusty trusty Nikon D5100 using a Tamron 2.8/ 70mm-200mm zoom lens (my absolute favorite for equine photos!) And a tripod. That's it. ISO was set at 160 with a shutter speed of 1/1000.

Inspiration

Well horses always call to me. I hoped to get a photo like this but as we all know, you take what you can get and sometimes it's not at all what one expects. I was out there to capture the horses in their world in all their beauty, rugged and strong. This photo captures all that and symbolizes the fight of survival.

Editing

Simple post processing in lightroom. The image was shot RAW so I added some saturation and a little clarity. I don't think this was even cropped.

In my camera bag

In addition to the above gear I also carry with me always a Tamron 16-300 f/3.5-6.3 as well as extra batteries and SD cards. Sometimes I bring other lenses but that depends on my outting.

Feedback

Know your subject or take the time to learn about it. Sure, a good photographer can capture some great images. However, knowing the subject intimately such as understanding characteristics, actions and general information can sure be helpful. Included in this is the audiance that may be looking at the final piece. I am a horseman. Have been since I was born. I like to think this helped me to get close and yet not interfere with the natural order of these fine creatures. Knowing their actions and staying patient... waiting for the moment, allowed me to attain this great image.
