Freaking Amazing Shot !
There is nothing better than a monsoon in the desert, unless, it is above the Superstitions.

Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photo in Apache Junction, Arizona.

Time

The time of day was 8:56pm. The Monsoonal storms were just starting to roll in.

Lighting

I think that lightning is more on the line of Serendipity. As Roman philosopher Seneca quoted: “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity" As was the case with my lighting photograph. What makes this shot unique is the split bolts connecting in the middle, and when it struck the mountain, it created a rim of light around the Superstitions.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 camera, an 18 to 35mm Nikkor lens. My tripod is a Gitzo carbon fiber XLS with a Gitzo 3 way tilt head.

Inspiration

The desert monsoons are breathtaking to see. I had always wanted to photograph the bolts of lighting over the Superstitions, and had waited until mother nature made this possible.

Editing

I had adjusted the levels, contrast, and brought up the shadow detail in post. Additionally, I a slight sharping using a high pass filter.

In my camera bag

My film equipment is a modified 4x5 view camera, with a slightly wide and slightly long Schneider Componon Lenses. Digital is a Nikon D810, with a prime 28mm lens, an 18-35 Nikkor, and a 70 to 300 Nikkor. My meter is a Zone 6 Pentax spot. My google cell phone.

Feedback

Be careful, not to get hurt. If you can see lightning or hear thunder at all, you are within range of the next strike. My F/stop was fairly wide open at F 5.6. My shutter was 20 seconds. I was on my tripod, and used the delayed timer to trip my shutter.
