A striated caracara watches me with a unnerving gaze. These birds are exceptionally intelligent opportunists. I watched one attacking a rockhopper on the shore line, another unpicked my bags to look inside. Later, when I visited Saunders Island a researcher and her supervisors were setting these birds puzzles which they solved pretty quickly. I always felt like they were waiting for me to die as they hopped around near me or flew above me, watching my every move.
