Location
This photo was take on the front porch at my studio to take advantage of the natural lighting.Time
It was August around 7:30pm and the sun was at the perfect angle such that it shined on her face and brought out wonderful detail.Lighting
The lighting for this shot was a mix of natural sunlight augmented by a camera mounted flash which was bounced of the white ceiling of the porch.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon 5D equipped with a Yongnuo yn600ex-rt. I used a Sigma 105mm-f28-ex-dg-os-hsm macro lens. The camera was hand held for this shot.Inspiration
The inspiration for this shot came from a few photos from another member here on Viewbug named Florianpascual. His photo entitled Beyond Everything had me captured for hours. I knew I would never be able to match his capture but wanted to try. I needed a model with amazing eyes. One day my daughter's friend Justice came over. I had not seen her in a while. As soon as I looked at her I knew I had my model. We setup the shoot a few days later.Editing
This photo went through a few minor touchups. There were 2 small imperfections in her skin that were removed. The eye color however, was not enhanced. In my camera bag
I typically carry a Canon 5D and a 7D as a backup. The 5D is usually equipped with a 24-105mm L series lens. I carry a variety of other lenses, flashes, filters and a tripod.Feedback
Make your model comfortable. When taking eye only shots, keep in mind that facial expression has a lot to do with how the eyes look. Ask her to laugh, cry, open her mouth, smile, etc. Each expression will show through in the eyes. I also found that having your model move her eyes so that she is not looking at the camera and then have her look back to the camera quickly can give a more natural vs. posed look. Be aware of what is behind You the photographer. Her eyes will reflect and that reflection will show heavy in the photo. Remember your focus point is her eyes. People looking at the photo will be drawn to her eyes and they will see what is reflected in them. Lastly, experiment. Try different head tilts and angles. Ask your model to shift her eyes in various directions and take lots of pictures.
