Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Shoebury East Beach, just after visiting the Post Office (was just starting my physics degree and needed to send off a whole bunch of paperwork).

Time

Around 6pm. I left the house fairly early in the morning with normal weather. By the time afternoon had come a thick and still mist had settled which lasted well into the night.

Lighting

The lighting and feeling during misty weather is absolutely magical, however it can also very tricky to get any good sense of depth in a photo. Everything can come out looking a bit flat. A solution is to find a repeating object that fades with distance (a fence, street lamps, trees, etc.), which in this case the lunch benches. I took this in the evening when the mist takes on a very moody feeling.

Equipment

When I left the house the weather was not that interesting so I did not bring my main DSLR with me - only a Canon IXUS 70 which I carry on me in case something interesting appears.

Inspiration

Misty weather like this happens so very rarely where I live that there was no chance I would not take a photo! I always wanted to see how the beach looks in mist and that directly lead me this photo (the sea is literally just over to the right). I managed to just get this photo as night was approaching.

Editing

Not much post production was done on this picture as the camera does not shoot in RAW format. Only a little exposure correction and a slight crop was all that was done.

In my camera bag

At the moment my kit consists of a Nikon D3000 with the kit lens (18-55mm), a set of Meike Extension Tubes for macro work and recently a Marumi Fit + Slim circular polarizer filter. I also carry a WhiBal G7 white balance card.

Feedback

Always keep your camera on you! Interesting opportunities always strike when you least expect it :)
