This photo was taken in the backyard of my clients home. They asked me to capture some photos of their children. They wanted outdoor portraits, so we chose their own backyard so the children would have fun playing in their own environment. He was an active little guy, and wanted to play the most in his playhouse, which was above my head. I had no ladder, so I used the tilt screen on my camera and watched him playing. This shot was during a moment of peek-a-boo that he was playing with me. He would duck behind the railing, and pop up above it and below it looking for me.Time
The session was early evening in the middle of the summer. It happened to be one of the hottest days of the summer in the upper 90 degree temperatures.Lighting
I only used natural lighting in this shot. The light was behind my subject and really gave the look I wanted.Equipment
This was shot with a Samsung NX500 mirrorless camera. 45mm lens, 800 ISO, f/2.0, 1/1250. No other equipment was used to take this photo.Inspiration
This little boy was having so much fun, and laughing and playing hide and seek with me using the railing on his playhouse. I found the more I interacted with him the better my shots were.Editing
Using Adobe Lightroom, I did correct the white balance a very little bit, and adjusted the tint to correct some of the redness in his face (he was hot from playing and running). In my camera bag
I normally have my Samsung NX500 camera body, and an Samsung 85mm f/1.4 lens and a Samsung 45mm f/1.8 lens in my bag when I am taking portraits. I also try to keep my Samsung 50-200mm f/4-5.6 lens in there as a backup lens.Feedback
I like to be prepared for just about anything when there will be children in my sessions. I don't go into a session with a child expecting anything. I am always open and flexible to changing my poses and my plans. I absolutely love to interact with my clients, and I think that it makes the portraits a memorable experience. The boy in this photo and his brother were asking about me for a couple weeks after the session. We made it a memorable experience for everyone involved. I am an ameteur photographer (I've been doing this for less than a year) and rely on more than my techinical ability to shoot a nice portrait. I rely on the experience provided to make the clients happy with me before they even see the portraits. I want them to remember how they felt during their time with me.
