I took this photo out east of the Black Hills near the Badlands.Time
I took this picture at around 11:00 P.M. A storm passed over my house earlier that night so I excitedly went on a chase down the interstate in attempt to track the storm down.Lighting
I found a weather tower off one of the dirt roads and realized that having its darkness contrast with the bright lightning in the background would create a lot of drama, so that's what I shot for.Equipment
I used a Nikon D600 with a Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5 lens on a tripod.Inspiration
I have always been in love with clouds and lightning as they fascinate me. With that said, I always strive to photograph them in the best way I can.Editing
I did little post-processing, mainly I darkened the foreground slightly to add contrast and I adjusted the midtone contrast to help dramatize the clouds.In my camera bag
Generally in my bag I have my Nikon D600 with a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. I also carry my Lee Filters everywhere for long exposures or tougher lighting situations. Additionally I always have a shutter release remote and my two tripods, one being a Gorilla Pod.Feedback
If you are trying to capture something similar to this, I would recommend one to find a place they think would look good with lightning around it prior to a storm rolling through. I would also recommend to have proper knowledge on what type of settings you desire to capture the shot as lightning can pass very quickly. If it is pouring outside, one could simply set their tripod up in their car and roll down a window.
