I love this! I was so disappointed that in our visit to AU the only place we saw kangaroos was at a kangaroo park - none in the wild (or town!)

Oh, that's a shame! They do mostly stay away from populated areas and tourist type places. This one was on Bribie Island, most of which is national parkland and uninhabited (by people). I also see them in the country areas on the mainland of Queensland. I'm not sure where you were when you visited, but it's too bad that you didn't get to see them while you were here. They are beautiful creatures.
