Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo by the harbour in my town, it's not always interesting, but when there are clouds arund... Oh, my, the sunsets can get pretty spectacular!

Time

When my sister is in town, we usually walk down to the beach in the afternoon, around 7:30 PM, when the people are starting to leave and just in time for the sunset. This day, with clouds swirling just above the horizon, we were particularly excited, knowing we were in for a very special one. Sadly, my external hard drive crashed some time aftter this, so I don't have the original time, but it was taken around October 8, between 7:30 and 8:15 PM.

Lighting

I have am very fond of the memory of the day when I took this picture. Being self taught, and desperate to capture the colors in the sky that afternoon, it was the first time that it occurred to me that "hey, maybe I should get to ISO 400!", that way I was able to use a shorter exposition time (1/400 s) which, coupled with my innate shaky hands allowed me to get a sharper image that I would have otherwise. I could have gone for a wider aperture (this was taken at f/8), but remember: shaky hands!

Equipment

Miraculously, this was taken with a Canon PowerShot SX230 HS, and no other equipment. To avoid ending up with a blurry mess, I squatted on the rocks, resting my elbows on top of my knees for balance. After this, I pressed the shutter speed at the end of an exhalation, like you would do when shooting an arrow.

Inspiration

There's not much to see in my town, so you have to look to the sky for inspiration. When there are clouds just above the sea the sunsets are some of the most beatiful I've ever seen, so I'm always looking for an opportunity to capture them and share them with the world. Specially this one, when it looked like a sea on fire.

Editing

I was extremely lucky with this one, it didn't need much work, just a little bit of brightening the shadows and darkening highlights, as well as getting a bit more of exposition in.

In my camera bag

Shooting with a compact camera means I usually carry little or no equipment at all, just the Canon SX230 HS and a tripod if I'm making a very deliberately "just picture taking" trip. Lately, though, seeing as at the moment I'm not among the economically gifted, but have been feeling a bit limited with the SX230, I've taken to also packing my dad's old Canon A1 when I want to be able to get more creative. When I do bring the A1, I usually pack a Canon 50 mm f/1.8 and a 24-35 mm f/3.5-4.5 Makinon lens, as well as a x2 telephoto converter and a polarizing filter (essential when you live in the sunniest part of Europe). My Samsung Galaxy S6 can also be called for duty in a pinch.

Feedback

Always have a camera on your person when going out, any camera! Also, if you live near somewhere where you can catch a nice sunset, try to get to know the conditions needed for it to be worth of a trip. Then, when you know them, be on the lookout so you don't miss an opportunity. Arm yourself with patience, as it can be some time before everything gets pretty and, most important, don't be like, don't forget your tripod home! And if you do, trsut your quads and get close to the ground for balance! Good luck and happy shooting.
