Stunning! You must have put a lot of thought into this one? I like how you didn't blur the water completely, it shows a lot more movement that way...

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is of the Southwold Pier in Southwold, England. Southwold is located along the coast in East Anglia, England.

Time

I had a late start in my day and wasn't able to get to the shore until in the late afternoon around 5 p.m.

Lighting

Lighting was a bit difficult as it was a very cloudy day as a lot of days in England have a bit of cloud cover. I had also just purchased my first Lee filter which is a .9 soft nd filter and wanted to try it out. The long exposure definitely helped out on brightening up the scene.

Equipment

I am using the Nikon D750 with a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens, along with a Slik tripod and a .9 soft nd Lee filter.

Inspiration

I arrived in Southwold and there was a bunch of people enjoying their day at the beach. Even with such gloomy weather people wanted to sit with friends and family by the water. It didn't matter that no one was really in the water as it was pretty cold. I also wanted to convey that not every photo has to be of a clear blue sky on a perfect day. You can still see the beauty in whatever you see. You can see people on the pier even though the clouds are dark and its about to rain.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and do a bit of editing on there. I made sure that the highlights are not blown out and nothing is too dark. Add in a bit of sharpness and saturation to liven up the photo. I bring the photo into photoshop and use NIK software and tweak the picture till i have it just right using the color efex pro 4. In the software i go in and adjust the contrast, sharpness, lighting and color till I have a nice blend and have it where I like it to be.

In my camera bag

I use a Venque bag and love it. I am able to store my 15" MacBook Pro, my tripod strapped to the side, and have my camera equipment inside. A spare battery and SD card is always a must. Micro fiber cloth and cleaning stick to clean any dirt or dust off of the lens. As far as my camera equipment i have my D750, 24 - 70 mm Tamron f/2.8 lens, and a 70 - 300 mm Nikkor f/4.5.

Feedback

Go out and look for something new. I had never been to Southwold before and wanted to explore. Find something that captures your eyes. When i first walked out to the beach the first thing i noticed was the pier. I knew that if it caught my eye it would catch everyone else. I first started on the other side of the pier but found my foreground to bare. I then walked along to the other side and found a nice set of rocks laying close to pier and knew that i wanted to bring that into the picture. Always make sure you see your subject from different angles and you might find a more interesting way to present your subject. If you want the water to smooth out but don't want an overexposed sky grab a ND filter. Grab a couple photos at different settings to test out what you want to get as well. It will take less time to do this then to have to travel back to the spot to get another photo. I was at f/22, 1/2 sec shutter speed, and ISO 100 to prevent any noise.
