Behind The Lens

Location

This picture, like many others have done in my own studio in Almaty (Kazakhstan), which I mostly use for portrait photography.

Time

Photo session took place in the middle of the day, but in this case, the time does not matter much, since I used studio lights.

Lighting

I used three light sources. It was a combination of continuous and pulsed light. Continuous light was directed at the background. Pulsed light to the right of the model and the reflector was left of the model.

Equipment

canon eos 5D Mark III, lens 50mm 1:1,4. Lens EF 70-200 1:2,8. Simple tripod and set light Photon (Chinese production)

Inspiration

I love art and my portraits are almost always inspired by the works of the old masters of painting such as Raphael, Leonardo, El Greco, Velazquez, etc. What strikes me in these works, how to create a person's character. I see portraits, trying to see and unravel the story of a man, his character...

Editing

Yes, I always use Photoshop. Post-processing helps me to recreate the effect of the picture. With special affection I use textures that help to create the effect of aged beautiful paintings.

In my camera bag

he camera and my two lenses. I really want to add to my kit a couple of lenses. But it will be in the future.

Feedback

For me it is very important to reveal the psychological state of the model. I really do not like smiling models. A smile in the photograph is almost always a mask. When we are alone with ourselves, in our thoughts, we rarely smile. Therefore, to achieve the psychological truth of the image I always ask the model to recall situations in life in which she had strong emotions. At the same time I always focus on the fact that it should not play these emotions, but should try to go through them again as much as possible. If it works, then the portrait, lives, then he touches and creates thoughts and emotions, awakens the imagination.
