Location
Living in the tip top region of Maine surrounded by lakes and pines, how could I not spend all my time in my nature. This photo gives me such a great appreciation for my parents and all the time they have allowed me to share in their space by Long Lake.Time
I spend a lot of my time sitting by and watching the chickadees, woodpeckers and the gorgeous yellow finches flow in and out of our trees between noon and 5pm; this one fell into place at about 3:30 and the patience is always worth the moment.Lighting
The birds tend to land directly in the sunlight, this day was a brilliant one, the amount of natural daylight and cloud cover on a summer day helped tremendously and my exposure was set at 1/300 (f/6.5, ISO400). I am continually educating myself on the balance between shutter speeds and apertures through out my process of learning photography.Equipment
This was shot with my very first DSLR, a Fuji FinePix Sl1000. No flash, no tripod, just a great day and a steady hand.Inspiration
I have always been enthralled and amused by the life of a bird. The beauty they contain within their own characteristics, feather colors and flight patterns leave me in a sense of awe. I watch the finch circle the feeder, there are days where I find ten of them dancing around one another in the fanciest of ways and sometimes there is just that one. The one that "plays" with you, as if they know you are trying to get that perfect shot and finally it allows you to capture it!Editing
As I am just learning to shoot, I am just learning the importance of processing! I got lucky because besides a bit of cropping everything about this photo is naturally how it was shot, I may have added a bit of contrast and cropped it down.In my camera bag
All I carry now is my Fuji Finepix SL1000, I have no fancy lenses and I don't even own a tripod; I take my two eyes and hold the image right in my hands.Feedback
Anyone who loves nature and appreciates anything that moves and creates life has to have all the patience in the world. A continuous frame capture helps, but know when your subject is around by studying it (weeks with these birds) and repeatedly show up in the same spot to make that moment happen!
